Written technical reporting can help property owners, installers, developers or advisers establish a clear factual record when concerns need more than an informal conversation. The report's purpose, intended audience and the questions to be answered are agreed before work begins.
What an agreed report may include
- Instruction, site or project details and the limits of the investigation
- Numbered, location-specific observations and photographic evidence
- Actual measurements and the methods used, where taken
- Applicable system information, manufacturer sources and document revisions
- Consideration of possible causes, uncertainty and additional tests required
- Reasoned technical conclusions and recommendations within competence
From instruction to report
- Identify the intended use, the questions and the requested report format
- Check independence, competence, scope and available documentary evidence
- Arrange the agreed local site inspection included in the standard inspection-and-report package, unless a different scope is quoted
- Review and label evidence, keeping observation separate from interpretation
- Provide the agreed written report and clarify any factual corrections
Ordinary reports and court evidence are different
A workmanship inspection report is not automatically a court-compliant expert-witness report. Legal proceedings may require different instructions, procedure, duties, competence checks and insurance. No report can establish concealed conditions or legal liability beyond the evidence and remit actually available.
